Grants Pass graduates receive $10,000 scholarships

By TIM BURLESON

GRANTS PASS, OR - Two local students have been awarded $10,000 scholarships from the Oregon AeA Technology Scholarship program. AeA is a program designed to encourage attendance in secondary education in Oregon in engineering and applied science.

Tamela Maciel and Andrew Sinclair, graduates of Grants Pass High School, are two out of 14 students in the state to receive the scholarships this year.

The scholarship program was established as the Intel Scholarship Program in 1999. In 2000 it was renamed the Oregon AeA Technology Scholarship program which allowed participation by other companies. Companies sponsoring the program now include Intel, HP, Xerox, ESI, Barco, First Tech Credit Union, Frye, InFocus and Pixelworks.

Students awarded the scholarships will receive up to $10,000 over four years, personal mentoring by an industry professional, and an internship opportunity at an Oregon high tech company.

Each recipient receives $2,500 per year for four years. Scholarship recipients must continue in a sponsor-approved science or engineering major, maintain a 3.0 GPA, and make expected progress towards their degree. They must also meet other academic requirements of the Oregon campus they attend.
